Planned construction for the new North Campus Housing Complex requires that electrical power to Alkek Library be shut off on two Saturdays in June – June 18 and 25. As a result, the Alkek Library will be closed on both those days
Most of you will be excited to know that the mid-term version of the library's 24 hour study hall will begin this Sunday, October 10. The library will be open continuously until Friday October 15 at 10:00 p.m.
Service points that will be staffed include:Circulation, Printer Help Desk on 2nd floor, Reserve/Periodicals/Media desk on 3rd floor and the Computer Lab on the 4th floor.
There will be a security officer on duty overnight. If you have a NOISE or Security issue, please call 512-245-3681 or report this to the Circulation desk staff.
Finals are over, students have returned home, and Alkek Library is closed for the holiday break. The library will re-open on January 4, 2010. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.
Remember it is still possible to access many of the library resources remotely. Most of the research databases are accessible online with much of the information available full-text. The library catalog indexes many e-books. E-books can be found by searching the catalog by title or keyword and limiting your search by e-books. You can also browse e-book collections by viewing this webpage. Interested in viewing streaming media? Alkek has a limited collection of streaming video available too as part of the Counseling and Therapy in Video from
Alexander Street Press.
The Ask-a-Librarian service is also closed, but you can send an email question to us. The email questions will be monitored and you will receive an answer to your question within a couple of days.
On behalf of Alkek Library, have a Happy Holiday break!
Alkek Library extended hours start this Sunday, September 13, 2009. Extended hours are the result of the pilot project that took place last spring.
In Fall 2008, the Associated Student Government passed a proposal, "Albert's Hours" asking the library to conduct a pilot program to study the feasibility of extending library hours. For six weeks beginning February 1, the library was open continuously from 1:00 p.m. Sunday through midnight Thursday. Library users were counted each hour overnight, and the use of study areas and computers was noted. Comments and other data were collected from a sample of patrons who used the library during the extended hours and from staff who worked those hours.
Analysis of the data and comments led to the following changes:
• Open one half hour earlier Monday through Friday mornings (7:00 a.m.)
• Beginning the third full week of the fall and spring semesters, remain open an additional two hours Sunday through Wednesday nights (close 3:00 a.m.)
• During the fall and spring “midterm” weeks, 24-hour study hall hours will be offered, similar to hours during finals.
Below are the extended hours excluding Mid-terms, Finals and Holidays.
Please see the library hours page for complete hours.
